Konst i kaffe

Coffee Art® was recently published in an article in a Swedish magazine, kaffe &. The unique art received a very nice spread. For the Swedish readers:

Efter sin första kaffekopp som var så bitter att det krävdes ett antal matskedar socker och halva koppen grädde, bestämde sig konstnären Andy, för att aldrig dricka en kopp till. Istället tog han och frun Angel fram penslarna och började måla med kaffesump. Möt det finska konstnärsparet som emigrerade til Amerika och skapade kaffekonst.

Hur kommer man på idén att börja måla med kaffe?
Vi blev inbjudna att ha en utställning på ett fik och ville göra något speciellt just för den miljön. Vi bestämde oss helt enkelt för att måla med kaffe. I alla fall försöka.

Tekniken funkade och utställningen blev en succé. Sedan dess har vi haft otaliga utställningen bade I Finland, Kalifornien, Afrika och på Island.

Vad målar ni?
Landskapmålningar och porträtt av bade människor och husdjur.

Dricker ni verkligen inte kaffe?
Jag gillar kaffe – min favorit är Tanzanian Peaberry. Men Andy lovade sig själv att aldrig dricka en kopp efter den hans mormor bryggde åt honom, och det löftet har han hållit.

Finns det några andra konstnärer som målar med kaffe?
Ja, det börjar dyka upp fler och fler. Men det vi ser nu, är bara början. I och med att kaffe är så otroligt poplärt kommer vi säkert att få se fler som använder sig av det i sin konst. Men vi var bland de första pionjärerna och det ärvi stolta över.

Kommer ni att ha någon utställning i Svierge?
Vi hoppas verkligen att vi ska få chans att ställa ut vår kaffekonst i sommar. Men än så länge har vi inte fått något napp. Men vi kommer att fortsätta kontakta bade caféer och gallerier.

Har ni några planer på att flytta hem till Finland?
Vi har bestämt att vi ska besöka Finland I sommar. År 2004 hade vi en av våra bästa utställningar på Kurikka museum i Finland. Det blev den största succén och mest framgångsrika i museets historia. I samband med utstĠllninggen spelades en dokumentär in som kommer att visas i de nordiska länderna i år.

Det måste jug å åt ganska mycket kaffe hemma hos er. Får ni rabatt?
Ja. Vi får faktiskt vårt kaffe gratis. Ibland jobbar Angel på ett café. Tillsammans med hennes lön får hon alltid några kilon kaffe. Så den bitten funkar utmärkt.

Kaffekonst teknik
Till en början provide Andy och Angel på ett flertal olika tekniker för att måla med kaffe. Först använde de kaffebönan för att skissa med. Därefter gjorde de pastel från kaffesump. Men ingen av de båda teknikerna var speciellt framgångsrik. Till slut bestämde de sig för att använda kaffe som vattenfärg. Men exakt hur de har utarbetat sin teknik vill inte avslöja.

Art of Coffee

After his first cup of coffee was so bitter that it took a number of tablespoons of sugar and half cup cream,  Andy decided to never to drink another cup. Instead , he and his wife Angel picked up brushes and started painting with coffee. Meet the  artist couple who live in America and created their Coffee Art® .

How do you get the idea to start painting with coffee?
We were invited to have an exhibition in a café and wanted to do something special just for the environment. We decided simply to paint with coffee.We tried several different process to use coffee as a medium. Using coffee like a watercolor was a great discovery. The technique worked, and the show was a success . Since then we have had countless exhibition both in Finland , California,  Africa and Iceland.

What do you paint?
Landscape paintings,  portraits of both people and pets and coffee related imagery.

Do you really not drink coffee?
I like coffee – my favorite is the Tanzanian Peaberry . But Andy vowed to never drink a cup after his grandmother brewed for him, and the promise he has kept .

Are there any other artists who paint with coffee?
Yes, it is starting to appear more and more . But what we see now is only the beginning. As the coffee is so incredibly popular we will certainly be seeing more that make use of it in their art. But we were among the first pioneers and we are proud .

Will you have a show in Sweden?
We really hope that we’ll get the chance to showcase our coffee art there soon. But so far we have not received an opportunity yet. But we will continue to contact both cafés and galleries.

Do you have any plans to travel back to Finland?
We have decided that we will be visiting Finland this summer . In 2004 we had one of our best shows at Kurikka museum in Finland. It became the biggest success and most successful in the museum’s history. In connection with YLE Finland, a documentary film was created about us  in which will appear in the Nordic countries this year.

It must cost quite a lot to have all that coffee in your home. Do you get a discount?
Yes. We actually get our coffee for free. Sometimes working Angel in a cafe. Along with her ​​salary, she always few pounds of coffee. So the that works great .

Coffee Art Technology
Initially  Andy and Angel worked on a variety of techniques for painting with coffee. First, they used the coffee bean to sketch with. Then created pastels from coffee grounds. But none of the two technologies were especially successful. In the end, they decided to use coffee as watercolor. But exactly how they have developed their technique, they do not want to reveal.
